It is a common misconception that economic growth leads to opportunity for all. The Opportunity Atlas shows that boom-towns like Charlotte, NC have not experienced Equality of Opportunity. That is because Charlotte has imported much of its talent, rather than promoting from within. So affluent people move to Charlotte, while disadvantaged groups do not share in the opportunity. Conservative business people find these data extremely convincing. What is correlated with Equality of Opportunity? I will discuss that more in my next post. In the meantime, you can see how Charlotte compares with Madison by exploring the interactive Opportunity Atlas.
